Job 38
1Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind, 2by words without knowledge? “Who is this who darkens counsel 3for I will question you, then you answer me! Brace yourself like a man, 4Declare, if you have understanding. “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? 5Or who stretched the line on it? Who determined its measures, if you know? 6Or who laid its cornerstone, Whereupon were its foundations fastened? 7and all the sons of God shouted for joy? when the morning stars sang together, 8when it broke out of the womb, “Or who shut up the sea with doors, 9and wrapped it in thick darkness, when I made clouds its garment, 10set bars and doors, marked out for it my bound, 11Here your proud waves shall be stayed?’ and said, ‘Here you may come, but no further. 12and caused the dawn to know its place; “Have you commanded the morning in your days, 13and shake the wicked out of it? that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, 14and presented as a garment. It is changed as clay under the seal, 15The high arm is broken. From the wicked, their light is withheld. 16Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep? “Have you entered into the springs of the sea? 17Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death? Have the gates of death been revealed to you? 18Declare, if you know it all. Have you comprehended the earth in its width? 19As for darkness, where is its place, “What is the way to the dwelling of light? 20that you should discern the paths to its house? that you should take it to its bound, 21and the number of your days is great! By what way is the lightning distributed, 25or the path for the thunderstorm; Who has cut a channel for the flood water, 26on the wilderness, in which there is no man; To cause it to rain on a land where no man is; 27to cause the tender grass to grow? to satisfy the waste and desolate ground, 28Or who fathers the drops of dew? Does the rain have a father? 29The gray frost of the sky, who has given birth to it? Out of whose womb came the ice? 30when the surface of the deep is frozen. The waters become hard like stone, 31or loosen the cords of Orion? “Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, 32Or can you guide the Bear with her cubs? Can you lead the constellations out in their season? 33Can you establish its dominion over the earth? Do you know the laws of the heavens? 34That abundance of waters may cover you? “Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, 35Do they report to you, ‘Here we are?’ Can you send out lightnings, that they may go? 36Or who has given understanding to the mind? Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? 37Or who can pour out the bottles of the sky, Who can number the clouds by wisdom? 38and the clods of earth stick together? when the dust runs into a mass, 39or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, “Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, 40and lie in wait in the thicket? when they crouch in their dens, 41when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?
