Proverbs 13

1A wise son listens to his father’s instruction, but a scoffer doesn’t listen to rebuke. 2but the unfaithful crave violence. By the fruit of his lips, a man enjoys good things; 3One who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. He who guards his mouth guards his soul. 4but the desire of the diligent shall be fully satisfied. The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing, 5but a wicked man brings shame and disgrace. A righteous man hates lies, 6but wickedness overthrows the sinner. Righteousness guards the way of integrity, 7There are some who pretend to be poor, yet have great wealth. There are some who pretend to be rich, yet have nothing. 8but the poor hear no threats. The ransom of a man’s life is his riches, 9but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out. The light of the righteous shines brightly, 10but with ones who take advice is wisdom. Pride only breeds quarrels, 11but he who gathers by hand makes it grow. Wealth gained dishonestly dwindles away, 12but when longing is fulfilled, it is a tree of life. Hope deferred makes the heart sick, 13but he who respects a command will be rewarded. Whoever despises instruction will pay for it, 14to turn from the snares of death. The teaching of the wise is a spring of life, 15but the way of the unfaithful is hard. Good understanding wins favor; 16but a fool exposes folly. Every prudent man acts from knowledge, 17but a trustworthy envoy gains healing. A wicked messenger falls into trouble, 18but he who heeds correction shall be honored. Poverty and shame come to him who refuses discipline, 19but fools detest turning from evil. Longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul, 20but a companion of fools suffers harm. One who walks with wise men grows wise, 21but prosperity rewards the righteous. Misfortune pursues sinners, 22but the wealth of the sinner is stored for the righteous. A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, 23but injustice sweeps it away. An abundance of food is in poor people’s fields, 24but one who loves him is careful to discipline him. One who spares the rod hates his son, 25but the belly of the wicked goes hungry. The righteous one eats to the satisfying of his soul,
